3 Victory Lessons You Can Learn from Dr. Ben Carson

Before Dr. Benjamin Carson was a champion to social conservatives he was a gifted neurosurgeon famous for his work separating conjoined twins.

Dr. Benjamin Carson effortlessly stood out at the GOP debate Thursday night.  He was not the loudest of the Republican candidates yet his performance was the most effective: He made amusing jokes, insightful comments on race and was even able to make references to his medical expertise.

Dr. Benjamin Carson's medical experience proves that he truly loves people and he loves this nation.

Here are 3 lessons that we can learn from Dr. Benjamin Carson.  Apply these teachings on a consistent basis in order to achieve the life of victory that your deserve:

ONE
Gifted Hands: Success is what you do with your ability, it's how you use your talent
Dr. Ben Carson was the first person to successfully separate twins conjoined at the head.  For a time, young Ben Carson was headed down a path of destruction.  He had performed horribly in school and had a raging temper.  On one occasion, Carson attempted to hit his mother with a hammer because she disagreed with his choice of clothes.  On a separate occasion, Carson nearly stabbed a friend after arguing over a choice of radio stations.

Dr. Ben Carson proves that your life does not get better by chance, it gets better by change.  Carson began reading the Book of Proverbs and came to understand that his anger was a sign of weakness because it means that other people and the environment can control you.

TWO
Think Big: Dream higher than the sky and deeper than the ocean
Ben Carson had a childhood dream of becoming a physician.  He grew up in a poor neighborhood in Detroit.  This was an environment where many young people lost themselves to crime and violence.  Through the first five grades the students at Carson's school knew him as "Dummy."  Dr. Ben Carson's nicknames are a bit different these days:  In 2001, CNN and Time Magazine named Dr. Ben Carson as one of the nation's foremost physicians and the Library of Congress selected him as one of 89 "Living Legends."  In 2008, U.S. News & World Report named him as one of "America's Best Leaders".

You must have a clear vision that aligns with your values, gifts and talents.  It is important to determine the details of your vision.  The more specific you are with the vision, the more tangible your dream will become.

THREE
Take the Risk: In the end we only regret the chances we didn't take
Dr. Carson explains that he could not operate in a field that requires cracking people's heads open or operating on something as delicate as the spinal cord unless he was comfortable taking risks.  He has many years of experience weighing risks and applies his Best/Worst Analysis by asking himself the following four questions:

  1. What is the best thing that can happen if I do this?
  2. What is the worst thing that can happen if I do this?
  3. What is the best thing that can happen if I don't do it?
  4. What is the worst thing that can happen if I don't do it?
After thinking through these four questions, usually you have analyzed the risk thoroughly enough to make a reasoned decision.

The greatest mistake you can make in life is to be continually fearing you will make one.  Ben Carson states, "My greatest accomplishment is when I can walk into that waiting room and tell a mom and dad that their 3-year-old is awake and alert and asking for them."  Only those who risk going too far can find out how far one can go.
