4 Victory Lessons From Curt Schilling: Protect What You Love

Curt Schilling

ONE
Stand for Something or Fall for Anything
Curt Schilling recently made a Twitter post congratulating his daughter on her acceptance to college.  In response, numerous 'trolls' posted derogatory tweets towards Schilling and his daughter.  Schilling was very upset and he made a post on his own blog about the incident.  The post exposed many of the individuals who made the derogatory tweets.  One of the 'trolls' was suspended from his school and another was fired from his position with the New York Yankees.  Additional 'trolls' were unveiled and Schilling ultimately successfully protected his daughter.  As opposed to ignoring the trolls, Curt Schilling stood up to them.

TWO
Protect This House
Curt Schilling showed us the importance of defending the things that we care about.  Defend your turn, protect your family and your dreams.  You have to protect the things that you love.  'Trolls' have been around for a long time.  It would have been easy for Schilling to ignore them yet he took a stand.  He showed his daughter how much he loved her assuring her that he would do everything in his power to ensure that she is protected.  This is how you must protect your dreams in order to achieve the victory that you deserve.

"You got a dream...You gotta protect it.  People can't do something themselves, they wanna tell you you can't do it.  If you want something go get it.  Period" (Pursuit of Happyness).

THREE
By Any Means Necessary
Schilling did not simply challenge a few trolls, instead he attempted to defeat a generation of Internet users that have accepted trolling as a norm.  Schilling grew up in an era where you were unable to hide behind your computer and a majority of people would not have made these comments to Schilling or his daughter's face.  Many of us would have advised Schilling against his actions, explaining to him that the Internet is simply too powerful.  It would essentially be David v. Goliath.

FOUR
Impossible is Nothing
Curt Schilling has provided us with a real-life example of the following quote: "Challenges are what make life interesting.  Overcoming them is what makes life meaningful."  Schilling's advocacy has given many people a voice.  We have attacked bullying in schools full-force and Schilling has broken ice on a fight, that can be won, against cyber bullying.
